As the College swings heavily into the year's athletic program, it's a real pleasure to be receiving team newsletters from a couple of coaches. Coach Teevens's letter tells of the huge and talented athletes now chomping up the practice turf at Chase Field, and the Friends of Hockey letter tells us of new coach Roger Demment and of the 14 new skating recruits we'll see this year. I receive these letters because I am a "Friend"—it takes a small donation to the cause, and the fellowship in return is well worth it.

It was such an eye opener, during our recent reunion banquet, to visit and dine with seven of our coaches. Believe me, these are exceptional people, intellectually and competitively. I never realized that over 300 of the freshman class (about 3 5 percent) take rowing on the Connecticut River as a sport. Coach Larry Gluckman incites enthusiasm. And women's basketball, under Jackie Hullah, has probably the most impressive ten-year record of any Ivy team in anything. It's not hard to become a Friend: simply write the DCAC. The feedback will be rewarding.

Rusty Ratcliffe writes from the Unilever Research Lab in Edgewater, N.J., where he is the principle research chemist. Actually, he didn't exactly write; he sent a cluster of 1943 1945 vintage V-12 sailor and marine cartoons, jokes, Daily Dartmouth news releases, and Green Key and Carnival jokes. Do you remember when the Daily D was called the "Dartmouth Log?" That's where these cartoons came from, and I note that Rusty himself apparently served as a role model for the typical "Swabbie." I knew there was a lot of good chemistry in Rusty, after all.

Joe Eisaman in Beverly Hills is a hockey fan year-round now. Gretsky has the L.A. crowds all hopped up. Joe promises to share with us his experiences on roller blades, the ice skates of L.A.

Bill Hallager has been appointed a director at Littleton Regional Hospital, near his home town of Lincoln, N.H. Dexter Brooks has been elected to the board of trustees of the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. NickNickelsen was honored at Bucknell University by the creation of a senior award in his name. George and Sandy Adelman had to miss our June reunion in favor of a meeting of the Corporate Board in Europe. SheldonSegal continues to receive deserved praise for the introduction of the birth control implant.

Did you know the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine has won yet another award? Announced in June winner of the Newsweek Sibley Award as the best periodical in higher education. The prize is a trophy and $2,000 in cash.

The Environmental Studies Program is looking into the possibility of operating a totally organic farm near the Hanover area as a student project to demonstrate the techniques and economics of farming without expensive and degrading chemicals. A lot of solid leadership plans are coming from this relatively new segment of Dartmouth studies.

See you at the Norwich Inn mini-reunion October 25-26 for Dartmouth night.
