After the depredations visited upon the native populations of this continent in the first three centuries of exploration and settlement, they had to suffer the further indignity of being made the subjects of distorted dramas exceedingly popular when they were written which depicted stereotypes based upon the view that Indians occupied the lowliest place in the scheme of things. In this volume, Priscilla Sears of the Dartmouth English Department analyzes many of the extant texts of these dramas, sets them in their historic context, and reflects upon their meaning for American civilization.
