A CAMPAIGN CELEBRATION
MAY 1983

To show their appreciation to regional chairmen and other key workers for the part they played in achieving the $204 million total of the Campaign for Dartmouth, the Trustees, president, and campaign chairman invited 1200 persons to return to Hanover on April 16 for a "Campaign Celebration." Some 350 came from all over the country, and altogether nearly 500 men and women were present at Saturday's big reception and dinner in Thompson Arena.

The celebration program had three main events: a morning panel discussion by undergraduates; an afternoon seminar with two professors who hold endowed chairs made possible by the campaign, and the dinner, which was followed by dancing.

The undergraduate panel discussion, chaired by Dean Edward J. Shanahan, dealt with student life at Dartmouth today. The faculty seminar had for its title "Centers of Excellence and the Survival of Creativity." Its two speakers were O. Ross Mclntyre '53, James J. Carroll Professor of Oncology, and Blanche H. Gelfant, Robert E. Maxwell '23 Professor in the Arts and Sciences.

For the gala dinner, the effect of a striped tent was created by stringing green and white ribbons from a central spot in the ceiling to the seats a around the arena (see photo opposite page). After dinner, trustee chairman Richard D. Hill '41 presided over a speaking program that included campaign chairman Norman E. McCulloch Jr. '51, President Emeritus John G. Kemeny, campaign director Addison L. Winship '42, and President McLaughlin.

While the campaign workers were in town, they were given a chance Saturday afternoon to inspect the excellent progress being made in building the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences, scheduled to be dedicated in September. Architect Lo-Yi Chan '54 came up from New York City to answer questions.
