Hood M.useum Dedicated
JUNE 1983

The torrents of spring did return to Hanover on Saturday, June 4th, but nothing could dampen the spirits of an estimated 300 people who turned out to witness the unveiling of the cornerstone for the Hood Museum of Art. Named for the late Harvey P. Hood '18, a twenty-six year member of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees and long-time director of H.P. Hood and Sons, New England's largest dairy products distributor, the Hood Museum will become the focal point for the College's permanent art collection of some 42,000 items. Scheduled for completion in the winter of 1985, the Museum will be the capstone of the three-building complex (comprising the renovated Wilson Museum, the Hopkins Center for the Arts, and the Hood) which all together covers more than five acres.

The dedication ceremonies, which took place in the Center Theater of the Hop and were conducted by President David T. McLaughlin, featured an invocation by Rev. Warner Traynham '57 and brief speeches by Lisa Martin Tunnell '78 of Atlanta, Ga., a member of the Hood Board of Overseers; Richard Teitz, Director of the Hood Museum; Shelton g. Stanfill, the Director of the Hopkins Center; Charles W. Moore, former dean of the Yale School of Architecture and project architect; and Mrs. Harvey-P. Hood. Refreshments served at the conclusion of the ceremonies included cookies, punch, and "Hoodsie" cups.
