Members of the Cabin and Trail Division of the DOC dedicated Woodsmen's Weekend to former Dartmouth President John Sloan Dickey who served from 1945 to 1970. "President Dickey stands out among college presidents not only for his reputation as an outdoorsman, but for his involvement with those students who were interested in the out-of-doors," the students said. "Over the years, he has introduced countless Dartmouth students to the outdoor experiences which make Dartmouth unique, whether during freshman trips, or fishing or snowshoeing. His support added strength to the Dartmouth Outing Club, and thus enriched its members, for which we will ever be in his debt."
Woodsmen's Weekend was organized in 1947 by the Cabin and Trail Division of the 74-year-old DOC. Last held in Hanover in 1980, Woodsmen's Weekend was established by Ross McKenney, the late DOC woodcraft adviser. It was McKenney's hope to pass on the special crafts and skills of a vanishing breed of north country lumberjacks to college students.
Events on May 6th-7th, held on Garipay Field across from the Dartmouth ski jump on the other side of Route 10, included a vertical chop, axe and pulp throw, chain sawing, pole climb, chain throw, scoot loading, log rolling, felling, splitting, speed chopping, buck and crosscut sawing, and fire building.
