The University Press of New England has received a $51,000 grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to create a book review editors' on-line data base. The project will be carried out at the UPNE offices in cooperation with the Dartmouth Computing Center and six participating university presses: California, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, Missouri, Yale, and New England.
Thomas L. McFarland, director of the Press, explained that the grant will allow them to compile and store an annotated directory of book review media which can be regularly updated and accessed by scholarly publishers whenever they prepare a review list for one of their publications. Cooperative use of the data base by the more than eighty university presses will avoid duplication of effort.
Founded ten years ago at Dartmouth, UPNE is a university press consortium with eight members: Dartmouth, Brown, Brandeis, Clark, Tufts, and the universities of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
