"If," of course, is the biggest little word in the English language. But if you have been reading this column over the past four years, you may have noticed an almost preponderant amount of space devoted to '45s in the educational field. And we have our share of scholarly educators. You may have noticed in the May and June issues of the Alumni Magazine, under the heading of "Dartmouth Authors," the names of Stanford L. Luce, professor of French at Miami (Ohio) University, and John P. Halstead, professor of history at American University in Cairo. Additionally, a May release from Lafayette College announced a grant from its committee on advanced study and research to Richard E. Welch Jr. Dick, who is also a professor of history, will study public responses to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's decision to recognize the Soviet Union.

Although Clifford Leslie Jordan Jr. has been eulogized both in this Magazine and in George Barr's newsletter, it is still only fitting and proper that this column make prominent note of his retirement. No words can be more fitting than those of the opening paragraph of his citation from the Alumni Council: "Thirty-four years of dedicated, effective, and faithful service to Dartmouth is not a new world record, but it has been accomplished by few College officers. And when, at the end of those years, the person is still viewed with great respect and genuine affection by all those from whom he has squeezed an extra dollar for Dartmouth, then we know we are dealing with a most rare individual. Cliff Jordan is singular indeed."

To that, his classmates add another indeed!

Although we do not usually report on deaths in this column, it seems also fitting to comment on the passing of Jack Burroughs. It is believed that Steve Hull led a contingent of '45s at his memorial service. Jack, for some inexplicable reason, seemed to me to embody the spirit of the class of 1945.

Cliff and Jack are two whose personalities have touched and influenced many of their classmates.
