Fifty years ago. The statement by Bob Ross urging early payment of dues deserves a repeat. "It was precisely 50 years ago this month (September) that our association with Dartmouth College really began. In September, 1934, we came together in Hanover for the first time, well over 600 of us (707), the pea green freshmen, the class of 1938. We wore had to wear those telltale green beanies with the white buttons on top. Commanded by countless lordly sophomores, we lugged countless desks, couches, rugs from the fourth floor of Lord or Streeter to the fourth floor of New Hampshire or Topliff. We crowded into Commons, ate at the long oak tables, and listened as our freshman orchestra up in the balcony beat out 'Judy' or 'Stars Fell on Alabama.' We trooped one by one into President Hopkins' office to be greeted and handed our certificates of matriculation. We sat in the rain in the stadium for the opening game against Norwich, belted out 'Dartmouth's In Town Again' and 'Eleazar Whee lock,' and gave a 'short cheer team.'
"And then the ultimate event of that first week: the College convocation in Webster Hall where we swelled with a little 18 year old pride when Mr. Hopkins began his address to us with the momentous words, 'Men of Dartmouth. . . .'It was all a very heady experience. But we were indeed or at least, we were on our way to becoming men of Dartmouth."
From another traveler, Lew Parker of Camden, Maine: "We will sail on August 31 from Montreal in the Polish liner Stefan Batory. The timing is dictated by a seminar on 'The Shipowner in History' at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, at which I am scheduled to read a paper on William F.Palmer and the Palmer fleet of Boston." Lew expected to be back in Boston on November 1. He goes on to say, "We had a grand Alumni College trip to the Danube last month.Barbara and Ray Ammerell and Betty and HamMitchell were in our section, and we saw GilTanis and Bob Reno for a few minutes when we met the other section in Budapest."
Hal and Ruth Berman are moving from Boston to Atlanta, where Hal will be teaching at Emory University.
