Once every so often, the Magazine staff convenes to poll its members experts all in one or another arcane area and identify those special Hanover places, bargains, meals, etc. that fall under the rubric thebest. Our results, therefore, are decidedly partisan.
For lunch, you can work out upstairs in Alumni Gym with Michael Dorris (above) or, conditions permitting, head out for the golf course for some crosscountry skiing. Hanover's best skylight (above, right) is found in Parkhurst Hall.
The best afternoon tea, depending on your budget and your sense of atmosphere, is either the Sidney Hayward Lounge at the Inn (3-5 pm) or the Sanborn House Library (4-5 pm) where you'll always find ready and intelligent conversation on matters literary.
The best quick lunch is either a quick trip to Lebanon's Miracle Mile, the Wok 'n Roll Hot Dog Stand outside the Bookstore, or a boxed lunch from the Café la Fraise. If you've got the time, the Cafe's country decor, reasonable lunchtime prices, and excellent entrees are well worth a stop. Three other Main St. musts include Molly's Balloon (best salads), Bentley's (best pasta and continental cuisine), and Peter Christian's (coziest atmosphere).
Resident horticulturist Nancy Elliot A' 43, recommends the Boston fern as the best houseplant for student (ab)use, though she admits, "For some students, cactus is the only thing."
The best study carrels, the Senior Fellow offices on the 2nd floor of Baker (above right), afford enough privacy so no one knows whether you're napping or knocking out your masterpiece.
Some other bests: the Bull's Eye (best burger), Lou's (best crullers), the Coop (best memorabilia), Parish Players (best theater), Collis Cafe (best vegetarian menu), Five olde Nugget Alley (biggest cocktails), Carroll Reed's (best preppie clothes), Jesse's (best-tasting coffee), the Hop Snack Bar (best renovation and best ice cream whip), Campion's (best place to run up your credit card), (best pizza, not available in Hanover), Home Hill (vies with D'Artagnan as the most elegant French cuisine), Hanover Hot Tubs (best place to get warm), Psi U's annual Bahamas Night raffle (best escape incidentally, if you win, you leave for Boston and points south that very night).* For such exotic categories as best room at the Inn, best way to reach Hanover via Greenwich, etc., etc., we need help from you who don't live within five miles of the Green.
