Some 110 club officers, representing approximately 70 clubs, returned to Hanover in early November for a three day program of workshops, meetings, and awards presentations. Many clubs and club officers were honored during the 1984 Club Officers Weekend for their work in promoting the College throughout the country.
The Dartmouth Club of Northwestern Connecticut was recognized as the "Small Club of the Year." Northwestern Connecticut is the first club ever to win the "Club of the Year Award" three times: in 1968, 1974, and 1984. In the past year club dues were up ten percent to 27 percent of total membership. For the benefit of the scholarship fund, the club sponsored a glee club concert and raised $1,500. With an additional $500 raised from dues and special contributions, the contribution to the scholarship fund was doubled over the previous year. Other activities included enrollment efforts, a seminar on Robert Frost, a summer picnic, and trips to football and hockey games. The club was cited for its active enrollment program. Receiving honorable mention were the "Heart of America" Dartmouth Club (Kansas City) and the Dartmouth Club of Delaware.
Honored as the "Medium Club of the Year" was the Dartmouth Club of Detroit. The club's executive corhmittee met ten times during 1983-84. Other club events included a visit from President McLaughlin, an art museum tour, a Dartmouth Day at Tiger Stadium, and a Christmas luncheon. The club raised more than $1,600 for its scholarship fund which now supports two undergraduates. The club regularly excells in the enrollment effort. The Dartmouth Club of Northern New Jersey was recognized as well, receiving honorable mention.
Honored as the "Large Club of the Year" was the Dartmouth Club of Chicago. The club's outstanding year included a dinner for President McLaughlin; a holiday luncheon for prospective applicants and undergraduates; and a summer picnic. The club dues were up six percent over the previous year and its executive committee met several times during 1983-84. The club added some $2,000 to its scholarship fund, of which three undergraduates are currently recipients. And in the area of continuing education, the club held two seminars: one was built around the Vatican art exhibit; another was a lecture and tour at the Chicago International Art Exhibition. The club sponsored an enrollment party for accepted applicants and played an important role in the interviewing process. Honorable mention went to the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Fairfield County, the Dartmouth Hub Club, and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York.
Allen V. Collins '53 was named "Club President of the Year" for his work with the Dartmouth Club of Hartford, Conn. His "three keys to success" have been "advance planning, team work, and effective communications." Under his guidance the club held nine monthly luncheons, a send-off party for the freshman class, a meeting aimed at applicants, and a sports night. He appointed a special committee aimed at attracting young alumni. In addition to club work he served as head class agent, helping to raise threequarters of a million dollars in a record-breaking reunion giving effort.
Alfred F."Ted" Bremble Jr. '56 was named "Club Secretary of the Year" for his work with the Dartmouth Club of Princeton, N.J. Since 1979 he has shared his skills from the field of advertising, serving as the chief communicator for a very active club. He has also served as a class newsletter editor.
The Club Officers Association "Award of Recognition" was given to the executive committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Eastern Massachusetts for its work in putting on the "Wearers of the Green" dinner, honoring those Dartmouth students and alumni who have made a significant contribution to athletics. Under the leadership of president Walter Yusen '58, dinner chairman John Dilorio '56, vice president Charles Morrison '54, and treasurer Thomas Reilly '60, the dinner drew more than 1,150 people and raised $20,000 for its scholarship fund and $2,500 for the U.S. Olympic team.
