Marianne Hirsch, associate professor of French and Italian and comparative literature, will spend next year at the Mary Ingram Bunting Institute of Radcliffe. The institute awards postdoctoral fellowships primarily to women and is a multidisciplinary community of scholars, creative writers, and artists. A 1970 Fulbright Fellow with A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees from Brown, Hirsch will conduct a booklength study of mother-daughter relationships as portrayed in 19th- and 20th-century literature.

The Other Candidates: Third Parties in Presidential Elections, a book by Government Professor Frank Smallwood '51, was chosen as a finalist in the 1983 Political Book Awards competition. It was one of 24 finalists, only five of which were published by university presses; The Other Candidates was published by University Press of New England. Smallwood has been active in politics on the state level in Vermont and locally in Norwich. Also selected as finalists for the Political Book Award were Richard Neely '64 and Robert Reich '68.

Young P. Dawkins III '72 has been named associate director of capital giving for the College. He was formerly vice president for marketing at the Hilton Head Plantation Company, a private residential development in Hilton Head, S.C. There, Dawkins was involved in many community activities, including chairing the Hilton Head United Way campaign and serving as a director of the Hilton Head Advertising Company. He is also co-author of a book tracing the Bigfoot legends along America's southeast coast.

A student internship in memory of the late Hugh Dryfoos '40 has been established in the College's development and alumni affairs office. The internship was endowed by classmates, family, friends, and associates of Dryfoos's after his death last September. Long active as a volunteer for the College, Dryfoos had served his class as head agent, secretary, and president; in addition, during the Campaign for Dartmouth he was a regional director, based in New York City, for the campaign.
