Alumni Fund Director Henry E. Eberhardt III recently sent a letter to Barry Alperin congratulating the class on setting a new 23rd-year-out dollar record of $156,078, surpassing the old record of $151,172 set by the class of 1958. The overall 1985 Alumni Fund achievement of $11.4 million was also a new Dartmouth record. On behalf of the entire class, the executive committee wants to thank Barry and his team of John Knight, key '62 chairman; Al Rapport, fraternity chairman; John Wilkinson, regional chairman; and Doug MacPhail, matching gifts and participation chairman, for a job well done.
During introductory remarks at the third annual faculty fellowship awards luncheon, Sandy Apgar announced the reorganization of the Faculty Fellowship Committee's membership. After this third year of operation, we will begin fixed, staggered terms and the replacement of the three original members. Sandy announced that Dr. George Beller will be joining the committee this year. George has had a distinguished career in medical research and is head of the division of cardiology and Barnes Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical School. His daughter, Amy, is a member of the class of 1988. In June the Los Angeles advertising firm of Davis, Johnson, Mogul, and Colombatto (DJMC) announced a joint public relations venture with Gelman and Gray Communications, Inc. Among DJMC's partners in the new firm will be Chuck Gelman, president and CEO, formerly with Golin/Harris Communications in Chicago. Chuck's organization will operate as a separate and autonomous company and will provide a natural extension to and complement the current advertising and marketing expertise of DJMC. Chuck was formerly executive vice president and managing partner of Golin/Harris with responsibility for McDonald's national and international public relations account. Prior to joining Golin in 1975, Chuck was a vice president of the J. Walter Thompson Company in both Chicago and New York City. Gelman and Gray Communications moved into new offices at 3435 Wilshire in Los Angeles in July.
President Paul Fireman of Reebok U.S.A. Ltd., Inc., recently announced that Paul Duncan has joined Reebok, a leading manufacturer of athletic shoes, as senior vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Paul, who lives in Sudbury, Mass., with his wife, Margery, and two children, came to Reebok from Towle Manufacturing Company, where he was vice chairman of the board, senior vice president of finance, and chief financial officer. Prior to joining Towle in 1980, Paul was a partner of Ernst and Whinney, a firm of independent public accountants.
The following is an update from BrianKlinger, O.D., F.A.A.O., an optometrist in Portsmouth, N.H.: After graduation, Brian went to Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago and received his doctor of optometry in 1966. He moved to Portsmouth with wife Lise and joined a practice there. His daughter, Heidi, is now ready to start UNH in the fall and son Erik is looking toward Dartmouth and the class of '92. Brian has been active in organized optometry since he started practice, serving as president of the New Hampshire Optometric Association and the New England Council of Optometrists before becoming involved on the national scene. He was recently elected one of the six trustees of the American Optometric Association at the organization's annual congress and will serve for three years. Some of his duties will include liaison activities with the state optometric associations of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi. The 25,000- member AOA represents optometrists all across the country as well as optometric students, educators, paraoptometrics, and other interested parties. Headquartered in St. Louis and Washington, D.C., it is governed by a board of five officers and six trustees. Brian took office along with the other board members and this year's president, Dr. Gerald J. Easton of Coronado, Calif.
