August is a 'tough time to write a column that's supposed to spark interest in October. But a brief sentence or two might remind you to pen a note to your class scribe.

As Mayor Ed Koch keeps asking, "How am I doing?" So should we ask, how is the Alumni Fund drive doing during our reunion year? The answer is: better than we have ever done before, but not as good as we are capable of. As of the end of June, we had tallied $186,470 in gifts and pledges. That's the good news. The flip side is that our goal is $400,066. Believe it or not, there is still time between now and year's end to up that pledge. With only a 47-percent participation rate, you have to believe someone's holding out!

Since reunion, I've gotten a few notes. Jim Cain has taken up skiing, fishing, rafting, and kayaking, as a diversion from his gastroenterology practice in Missoula, Mont. He and Kay have two boys, Jace, 15, and Josh, 11, (six foot, one at 15?) Jim and Paul Lipscomb '67 are partners in a local ski area, Snowbowl, which has a vertical drop of 2,600 feet, two chairs, and a rope tow; sounds like the Skiway. So if you want a good deal on lift tickets, "Ski Missoula!"

In other news, John Miles has been appointed dean of the Huxley College of Environmental Studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash, (thanks to Paul Ford '56 for the note). Congratulations, John.

My last piece of news I'm saving for November.

Jim Weiskopf '66, left, was presented witha plaque in April for his efforts on behalfof the Washington, D.C., DartmouthClub's enrollment program. John Sharer'72, right, cited Weiskopf's success in enrolling some 90 of the 200 area schools inthe Club's program.
