President Jim Dalton has announced some important new class officers appointed to assist him in the affairs of the class. Appointed as vice presidents are five men who have been super active and super effective in the past: Tom Donahoe, George Johnston,George Southwick, Tom Schwarz, and JoeStevenson. Also appointed is able Dan Goggin to assist Ted Spetnagel as social chairman.

In the future we will need a new class treasurer, since Jack Hall is moving to Washington, D.C., where he will be up to his eyeballs helping to implement the Grace Commission's 2,478 recommendations for cutting federal government waste. This commission officially known as the President's Private Sector Survey on Cost Control was named for its chairman, Peter Grace, and produced a 47-volume proposal to overhaul Uncle Sam's spending habits.

Dick Duncan has been active in the TimeMagazine libel trial, which was instituted by Israeli Ariel Sharon. Mr. Sharon felt he had been maligned by an article which suggested he was involved in the Lebanese Phalangists' massacre of a group of Palestinians. Dick, who is chief of correspondents for Time, gave testimony that he hopes supported the absence of malice of the article. This case, in combination with the CBS suit by General Westmoreland, could have great significance in determining the latitude the media has in handling public figures.

Abbott Meader has, at my request, drawn a class birthday card which I will be sending each of you on the occasion of your 50th birthday. Abbott is a very talented guy and a successful artist, who works at Colby College in Maine with a current emphasis on impressionistic oil paintings. However, for the enjoyment of his classmates, he has come up with a card that is humorous, evocative of the Dartmouth spirit and supportive of us oldsters on the occasion of our big day. Incidentally, as part of this project, I have discovered that the three oldest men in the class are Kwanha Yim, Peter Serenyi, and XavierMarch, who were in their twenties when they started Dartmouth, and that the youngest is Peter Williams, who was 19 on graduation day.

Two classmates who are separately celebrating their 50th birthdays in a big way are Charley Schneider and George Southwick. Charley's son, Scott, who is a Dartmouth senior and who spent the fall of 1984 in Scotland, met Charley in Paris for a big dinner on the official day. George surprised his family on Christmas Day by announcing plans for a three-week trip this June to Switzerland and France. Mimi and their five kids will accompany him.

Now, I would appreciate everyone else writing me, even if your celebration doesn't include a European trip.

If you have not already contributed to this year's Alumni Fund, please send your contribution in as soon as possible. It will assist head agent Hanny Mason by cutting down the number of people who have to be contacted. The Fund is shooting for a 15 percent increase this year.
