This is Florida month.
In Sarasota on March 7, Rog Bury, with help from Don and Dotie McCall, staged a happy get-together of the clan of '27 at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Twenty-six classmates and wives gathered for lunch, for remarks by Bob Bliss, and a showing of the film "Wearers of the Green," which highlighted many Big Green athletes of former years. Present, in addition to Rog, the McCalls, and Bob and Carolyn Bliss were: Ben and Mim Bell, Guyand Tommy Bostwick, Dick and Peg Fox,Tom Gillespie, Bert and Ruth Gustin, Docand Vera Harvey, Bob and Franchot Long,Lollie Musgrove, Paul and Helen O'Connell,Dick Stowe, Frank and Evelyn Strong, and Jack and Jackie Thees.
On the same March 7, Ed Jacob mailed a card from West Chester, Pa., to say that "a business matter jumped out of the weeds to prevent me and Dot from attending the Sarasota bash. Thanks 1,000 times for the 1985 class birthday card with its nostalgic view of the old watering trough. Someone should dust it off and put it back where it was, just for old times' sake."
Tom and Dot Gillespie were back in Dunnedin for four weeks from mid-February to mid-March.
Bob and Madeline Page were in Fort Myers for three weeks in January. Before heading south, they had forsaken the cold of Needham, Mass., for Christmas holidays in Denver, Colo.
Bill St. Amant, who lives year round in Hillsboro Beach, Fla., wrote that some of his friends who came south from north to get rid of the frigid cold were unhappy during the January freeze which ruined many of the Florida citrus crops. To quote, "If they came south for the winter, they sure found it."
Also complaining about the Florida weather was Elmer Zimmerman, who is a permanent resident of Winter Park. The thermometer registered only 26 degrees on the day in February when he wrote. Zim says that he and Doris are still going strong and that he is in pretty good shape for his 81 years.
Bob Tobey of Northbrook, III., was in Florida for a time during the Christmas holidays and again in March. In between times, he and Alice took a cruise to St. Thomas. While in Florida, they saw Jack and Jackie Thees, both of whom they found to be looking well.
Ben and Mim Bell are in Sarasota for the winter, as usual. Before he evacuated Rutland, Vt., last fall, Ben's picture was in the Rutland Journal, along with an article which reported that four generations of Bells gathered at the Cortina Inn in October to celebrate Ben's 80th birthday. Those attending included Ben's wife, Mim, his three daughters, and several grandchildren.
In January, Cam and Sarah Clokey moved from their place in Sun City, Fla., to a fullcare facility called Freedom Village. Their new address is: 6501 17th Avenue West, Apt. J114, Bradenton, FL 33529. At the time that he wrote in February, Cam was recovering well from several weeks in the hospital for surgery. He was pleased with the Outing Club picture in the January/February AlumniMagazine, not only because he appeared in a prominent spot in the picture but also because he has vivid memories of that particular climb up Mount Washington. Cam keeps in close touch with his former roommate, BudWesselmann, who lives in Maitland, Fla. We, too, have had a recent card and several phone calls from Bud and are pleased to report that he is recovering nicely from the shock of his wife Dot's death last November. He had a pleasant trip to Ohio over the Christmas holidays for visits with his son and daughter, who live there.
