Steve Chase, responding from New Braunfels, Tex., to Whitey White's reunion letter, is hopeful of making reunion, especially since they have a grandson, Jeffrey Chase, graduating in the class of 1985. However, he is still doubtful due to reasons of health; he has had problems over the past ten or 12 years, including a coronary bypass six years ago, but is ambulatory, walks a mile or more every day, and takes care of a large lawn during the summer.
At last, someone we know has won one of those fabulous sweepstakes. Bob Reynolds was one of 75 picked out of the millions of participants to win two round-trip tickets on American Airlines from Los Angeles to Hawaii for nine nights and ten days, including side trips by air to Molokai and Kona with three nights at each of the Sheraton hotels in Waikiki, Molokai, and Kona. Bob is taking his sister with him. She lives near him in Santa Monica and is enthusiastic, having been to Hawaii before. He reports an uncomfortably cold winter in his area, and then it became too hot, with the temperature hitting 90 recently. He was planning on attending reunion.
With regret, we learn of the death of Professor Frederick Hooven in February. He was an adopted member of our class and an extraordinary member of the Thayer School faculty.
Also came word of the death of ChanWalker's wife in January. Chan is in Maui, Hawaii, until May, and his health and eyesight are failing, according to a report from his daughter.
The grapevine from Florida reports on Tubby Washburn and his orchard of citrus fruit trees which take much of his time and load down his departing guests with fruitful goodies. Our traveling representatives took in the Dartmouth luncheon at Naples with Don Lyman's widow, Helen, and ran into Hal Rider. They also reported learning of the recent death of Ross Beatty's wife.
E1 Waring claims to have "retired" in 1962 but then ran a boat yard for four years, then an art shop for twelve years, and is now in the business of selling police supplies in Fall River. Need any night sticks, handcuffs, badges, holsters, or mace? In between times, he is active with Rotary, church, police, and a postcard collection, among other things. His secret to fun and health is "keeping active."
Don Hunt wouldn't tell us, but his wife does, that last summer Don was the Senior Champion Golfer at Eastward Ho Country Club in Chatham on Cape Cod.
Phil O'Connell writes to report the passing of his wife, Eileen, in late March after a long illness. His large and supportive family, including 14 of their 17 grandchildren, was with him. One of those unable to attend is in London, and the other two in California. A recent arrival in the family is a great-grandson, Kellen O'Connell Breen (a "foin name," says Phil); Phil planned to attend our reunion, bringing his daughter, Chris Breen.
You guys will have to excuse us for not acknowledging the very helpful letters and notes you send us, as life here is still rather hectic. Going to the office three or four days a week and trying-to close out a law practice and retire, reading on tapes for the blind, vacationing in the Caribbean in the winter, traveling abroad and elsewhere in spring or fall, giving papers for my literary club, sailing our boat in the summer, trying to keep up with tennis in summer and badminton in winter, and keeping up with our class affairs keep us rather busy. However, keep the news coming; your classmates want to know about you.
Thought for the month: If it weren't for nostalgia, some of those "good old days" would be a lot rougher. Our reunion attendance should have broken records, according to Whitey. Hope you were there.
