Let us open the 1985-86 notes with these comforting words: Touch us gently, Time! Let us glide down thy steam Gently, as we sometimes glide Through a quiet dream. - Byron Proctor (1787-1874)
By letter on February 3, 1985, my secretary and I agreed to use a slogan for our 65th reunion. The slogan was to be:
"Classmates: Remember we want to see no fewer than 65 at our 65th." Imagine my surprise when I opened the March '85 issue and saw that Laura Carter '2O is doing a better job with my slogan than I even dreamed of she created a logo to accompany her 65th slogan. 1921 will invent another blockbuster - maybe!
Osborne C. Ward and his wife were hospitalized several times during 1984. Now recovered, he sends best wishes to all of us.
Through the 1921 FBI (which is our conduit for class news), we learn that Sam Plumb is enjoying good health and "savoring fond memories of the days of yore spent in Hanover." Come, Sam, tell us more about the days at 40 Wheeler.
Some fellows never quit, and that applies to Victor Stewart Welch, who writes that he is "still active in business." What kind of business, "Took"? You didn't say, but your address, "Sugar Foot Farm," seems to indicate that you are a sugar baron, or maybe it's one of those tobacco farms that are visible along the Connecticut River as one drives south.
This September column caught us secretaries by surprise. There would be no surprise if classmates told themselves when they receive the Dartmouth AlumniMagazine and immediately turn to the 1921 news: "It isn't fair that I should enjoy the philosophy that Harold is giving us when if I did my part, I could give every member of the class a bit of my own news. I am not fooling anyone if I claim to have none."
Of course you have news how could anyone of us have lived through 60 or more years of turmoil without wringing our hands and shedding a tear or two over the uproar.
The summer is over, the beach is deserted, no one to talk to so why not write that explosive paragraph that you have been saving for years to leave to your grandchildren.
In the time of Pythagoras, that proverbial phrase Ipse dixit was introduced into ordinary life. That's what I expect will happen to "Wah-Hoo-Wah," as long as the undergrads want it. Time will tell.
