Hello again. The annual COW (Class Officers Weekend) in Hanover, May 4-5, is now ancient history. Since Tom Gillespie detailed it in his May "Speakeasy," suffice it to note that attendees were: SethBesse, Paul and Betty Hannah, Bob andFranchot Long, Charlie and Ruth Paddock, Paul and Helen O'Connell, Frankand Evelyn Strong, and Steve and DotTracy. The class of 1927 received honorable mention as an outstanding class: PaulO'Connell brought honor to himself and to the class by being named Class Bequest Chairman of the Year: Chuck Baker and Larry Scammon were elected to fill vacancies on the class executive committee, and Brad Fuller has agreed to take over the chairmanship of the 60th-reunion committee with Steve Tracy as an assistant.
Several recent inductees into 1927's "Made it to 80 Club" have acknowledged our congratulations as follows:
Hank Orth celebrated this important anniversary quietly in St. Simons Island, Ga. Although he used to do a lot of traveling, this has been limited, of late, to occasional trips to Savannah and Jacksonville plus an annual trip back to Milwaukee, where he lived prior to retirement.
Don Megathlin, whose activities in Yarmouthport, Mass., are somewhat limited by a heart condition, was invited out to all of his meals by friends and neighbors.
Doc Milliken responded to his event by hopping the train from Sykesville, Md., to Phoenix, Ariz., and then going on to Oklahoma City, where there are no trains. There he attended the graduation of a grandson from Wentworth Military School.
And Ken Yeaton responded by sending in a summary of his daily and weekly ac- tivities in Naples, Fla. Ken shuns the thought of doing anything for the last time but, notwithstanding, has started to build a house at Owl's Head on Ash Point in Maine, which he hopes to complete in September. He claims that this is the first house that he has built since turning 80.
We are indebted to Dow Mills for a snapshot of four handsome and well-preserved members of Tribe '27. It was taken in March beside the pool of Syd Harris's winter apartment in Phoenix, Ariz., and included Steve Osborn, Syd Harris, JackSheldon, and Dow. The occasion was a brunch served by Syd's wife, Ruth, during which the group all shared telephone calls to Nat Morey in Florida and HowieMullin in San Diego.
One of the biggest rewards of being a class secretary is receiving a warm letter from an old friend. Such a letter was recently received from Harry Dey. Since the recent death of his wife, Harry has led a quiet life at 1500 N. Cooper Street, #C-12, in Staunton, Va. Prior to his retirement in 1972, Harry spent his entire working career of 46 years at Staunton Military Academy, including 20 years as its superintendent.
Another letter from a long-lost friend arrived from Mort Cavis, who wrote that he is in good health and still resides in Bristol, N.H. He thoroughly enjoys the occasional pictures of classmates that appear in the Alumni Magazine (we wish that more correspondents would send them in) and keeps busy at his hobby of making transparent slides of New Hampshire wild flowers.
Courtesy of Charlie Huntley, we learned that Syd and Ruth Harris were in Austin, Tex., in April when Ruth attended a three-day harp festival and took part in a concert in the city's new $44,000,000 performing arts center. Charlie also noted that the Harrises are planning to go to Israel in July for another harp festival.
Mike Choukas's son, Mike Jr. '51, has recently been promoted to a new post in the administration in Hanover. Previously director of alumni programs, he is now director of alumni affairs.
We regret to close with the report of the deaths of Harry Dey's wife, Elizabeth, on March 14 and Gus Cummings's wife, Sybil, on April 10, as well as the deaths of classmates Francis Cloran on May 25,. Jonathon "Jock" Davis on June 15, and Houston Gray on July 3. Also, as we send this in early July, we have just received word from Hanover that George VanPraag Marks died on December 25, 1981.
We hope you've had a good summer.
