The class will be relieved to learn that its executive committee met Friday of Class Officers Weekend and efficiently handled the business before it. Bob Kirk presided because president Dick Rugen had been detained by a business commitment. Present also were Harry Bond, Allan Dingwall, Alex Finnelli, CharlieWeinberg, Ad Winship, and your secretary. Treasurer Leo Caproni also had a conflict he had to proctor his exams at NYCT College, where he teaches full time - but was able to send in a report assuring our solvency.
Bob Encherman, not present, had earlier urged that we plan something for Saturday night, as well as Friday, for the autumnal mini-reunion. The committee went along with Bob's plea and left the "locals" to explore available sites such as Pierce's Inn in Etna for Saturday night. Friday night, October 12, we'll be at the Outing Club.
Kirk reported that scholarships named for Phil Gordon and Jack Tobin had been funded. Thus, there will always be a Tobin scholar and a Gordon scholar at the College. Harry Bond is enjoying retirement from the English department, dividing his time between fishing for salmon in Canada and writing in Hanover. Alex Finelli splits firewood, plays tennis, and works on his book right there in Hanover. Alex reports that Craig Kuhn still plies the legal trade in Pittsburgh, riding his bike the seven miles to and fro daily.
Allan Dingwall had the rare opportunity of heading the search committee which looked for his own replacement as he retired from the development office. Ad Winship spends his time telling other schools how Dartmouth does it — raising money, that is.
Charlie Weinberg, who has spent his career in construction, is now building housing for the poor-a not-for-profit operation in metropolitan New York.
Guy Swenson of Concord, N.H., has gone "of Counsel." "I'm looking for more excitement than you get running a big law firm/' he said. Bob Searles reports that life in Hanover is great, and, he certainly looks the part. A chance encounter with Milt and Phyllys Williams suggests that this Big Apple couple is thriving.
Leo Caproni writes, "Just back from San Francisco, where I had lunch with Ernie Friez, who is now general manager of the Metropolitan Club on Sutter Street. Ernie offered hotel-type rooms at the Club for '42s visiting San Francisco at very reasonable rates compared to hotel tariffs in that city. Contact Ernie at the Club for reservations for suites or rooms."
Ed Hawkridge has moved up from assistant clerk to first assistant clerk at the Land Court, demonstrating that progress continues in his second career. He also sent along a newspaper clipping describing the retirement party for Art Henderson, who has been purchasing manager for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for the past quarter century. According to the newspaper, Art and Patricia plan to stay on in Falmouth in retirement.
We end with another impressive oneliner on Harry Jacobs, chairman of Prudential-Basche Securities, Inc., who "is expected to be elected chairman of the Democratic Business Council, an advisory arm of the Democratic National Committee, at a meeting of the council in Washington."
