Hi, classmates. At this writing, it is a glorious July day, and your scribe has one of the finest jobs in all New England. My job is to prepare a column for the September issue, and the deadline was last week. As any student of Louis Silverman's Math 1 class can recognize, I totally overlooked the deadline. So, as fortune has it, I make sales calls in the Hanover area, and having sold my $100,000 quota by noon, I decided to visit the offices in Crosby/Blunt Hall and there learned, to my shock, of my tardiness.
So here I sit in Room 308 in the Crosby front wing, in the very dorm room I lived in during the summer of 1943. JohnHawks and I roomed here, and the desk I now sit at is in the same spot my desk was-Marty Marino '46 lived across the hall. So 42 years have brought me back to the same spot where I did my freshman homework. I hope this column does better.
Yesterday in Keene, Dick and AliceLeary, now living in New London, N.H., and retired, stopped in for beer, juice, and finally a nice supper and a very pleasant visit. Dick's last unmarried daughter was married one month ago and is now in La Jolla, Calif. Dick's son, Steve, who was a three-year star in hockey and lacrosse and played one year of football (1968, I believe) is running the electrical business.
We reminisced over a few of our oldtime antics. I volunteered a postcard from Bill and Mo Buckingham from the rail of a sailboat in New Zealand. Why were they leaning over a rail? Don't know, but the postcard mentioned a big storm and a delightful trip in the South Pacific. Buck is back now in Seattle, and the Chases hope to visit near there in November.
Those of you who haven't been able to frequent Hanover should really make the effort. The town and the College are in really fine shape, and in summer and autumn it's beautiful. Our class will be together October 4-5 at the Norwich Inn, but even at other times you'll be well pleased by a visit.
In closing, our class finished only $6,000 below our goal of $100,000 Alumni Fund dollars, but it had only 49 percent participation. A good job by Jim Osborne, and we'll need a running start for the coming year. Best wishes from Crosby Hall to all '47s for a fine summer and fall season.
