The Secretary of the Navy has selected Hal Bernsen for promotion to Commodore, USN. Hal has been in the navy for 26 years. After attending Dartmouth on an ROTC scholarship and graduating with a degree in foreign affairs, he began his service as a naval aviator. He has now achieved the highest military rank of any member of our class, if my records are accurate. At present, Commodore Bernsen is director of plans, policy, and programs for the U.S. Central Command, McDill AFB, Fla. Among earlier assignments, Hal served in Vietnam, graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College, and commanded the USS LaSalle. All the boys from NROTC join the rest of the class in saluting Dartmouth's own Commodore Harold J. Bernsen.
Bob Gilges was listening intently some years ago when some sage told bright young men to "be at the right place at the right time." Bob is presently the partner in charge of information services at Peat Marwick Mitchell and Company, a New York-based Big Eight accounting firm. Bob's department pioneered in the use of electronic mail in the firm. Peat Marwick is a leader in applying new technology to this ancient business. They lease more than 4,000 electronic mailboxes and use a variety of personal computers in a network that has largely replaced the telex. Recognizing his prominence in the field, the March 18, 1985, issue of Info World, the personal computer weekly, has a handsome picture of Bob on its cover. A computer keyboard is at his fingertips. Congratulations, Bob, on your steady climb in Peat Marwick and your mastery of the technologies that will be our communications system in the future.
Not only is Bob featured on a magazine cover, but he is also our mini-reunion chairman, a task that is hardly mini. He sends a reminder that your 1985 calendar should be marked for Dartmouth Night and the Yale football game on November 1-3. Rooms can be reserved at the Sheraton North Country Inn, West Lebanon. The parade on Friday night, the bonfire, the pregame cocktail party at Dave Bradley's, and a class dinner on Saturday night have already been scheduled. If you haven't attended, this is a very special weekend. It is impossible to watch that bonfire soar skyward and hear the band play Dartmouth songs without a thousand memories flooding over you. Plan ahead so that you can be in Hanover on Dartmouth Night this year.
