Sixty-two years ago George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared while scaling Mount Everest. Challenging the • British climbing establishment's contention that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first ever to stand on the summit is Tom Holzel '63. Holzel maintains that Mallory reached the peak 29 years earlier and died on the way down. This fall an expedition led by Holzel will search for evidence supporting his theory and perhaps even solve the mystery. He will return to this country in late October. Holzel, besides being an inventor and adventurer, is also an author. His book, entitled TheMystery of Irvine and Mallory, is now on sale in England. Stateside readers will have to wait until the first of the year when Holt-Rinehart publishes the American edition. In the meantime, see the '63 notes for more details.
