Bruce Rauner and Bill McLaughlin wrote to report on a canoe trip that they took this summer. Along with six other '78s they took a one-week trip to the Canadian Quetico Canoe Area in early June. The first rendezvous was in Minneapolis: Andy Ebbott and Jeff Nadhemy in from Boston; Charlie Denison, Dave Casper, and their leader, Bruce Rauner, in from Chicago; and Jim Bullion and Bill McLaughlin, semi-hosting from Minneapolis. Bob McCarthy, after a token appearance in Denver for his first anniversary, flew into Duluth to join the group heading north.

McLaughlin wrote: "The trip was off the northern-most part of the Gun Flint Trail. The weather cooperated with a full week of sun - enjoyed by all, and lully (literally) by 'Lady GoNads' who spent afternoons working on his sink-night tan. The first big lake crossing was done into three-to-four-foot waves. Casper and Bullion never canoed together again. Denison won the 'biggest fish that got away' prize, while McLaughlin toppled into the lake fully dressed while cleaning fish. Portages between lakes went smoothly, led by the Lodge contingent, who displayed their college training of portaging kegs from Psi U. Believe it or not, everyone had plenty to eat - particularly with Bob whipping up desserts like cheesecake - not a rough trip." Rauner sent a photo which accompanies this column.

Over the phone, Rauner gave me some details of what each of the group is doing these days. Rauner and his wife, Beth, just had their second child, Stephanie. Their first daughter, Libby, is two. Beth is a Smith grad who is a former commercial lender for Northern Trust and before that was a recruiter for Harris Bank in Chicago. Bruce has his M.B.A. from Harvard and is now in venture capital in Chicago. Denison and his wife Bobbie, have a little boy, Charlie, who is one. Charlie senior got his M.B.A. at Northwestern and is an assistant vice president at Harris Bank. Like Beth, Bobbie used to work at Northern Trust. Casper and his wife, Jane, a graduate of Miami University in Ohio, are expecting their first child in June. Dave has an M.B.A. from University of Chicago and is also an assistant vice president of Harris Bank. Jane works in clothing retailing.

Ebbott married his wife, Katie, in September. He is a real estate financial analyst in Boston with Leggat, McCall, and Werner. Katie works for Harvard's HMO. McLaughlin is our class treasurer. He and his wife, Martha, met at Tuck School where they both got their M.B.A.'s. They have a daughter named Kelly. Bill is a product manager at Pillsbury in the Twin Cities. Bullion and his wife, Ellen, have a one-year-old named Matt. Bruce thinks Jim and Ellen also met at Tuck School. Jim is in commercial banking at First Bank of Minneapolis. McCarthy and his wife, Isabella, are expecting a child in June. He was working at American Hospital Supplies and going to school nights but is now a full-time M.B.A. student at the University of Denver. Isabella is a pharmacist. Nadherney is a commercial real estate broker with Meredith and Grew in Boston.

Doug Murphy has been promoted from tax compliance agent to supervisor in the state tax department in New York, where he has been working for eight years. He has two sons, Douglas, eight, and Kareem, seven months. He is vice president of his local union. He has been elected to the area policy board for the South Bronx where he is responsible for choosing proposals for city grants. He is going to school nights at the Center for Media Arts to learn about television productions. He is thinking of trying to get into television after he has been with the state for 10 years and gets a vested interest. He says hello to everyone in "the crew" and also on the '78 freshman basketball team. He fervently hopes that other Dartmouth people will call him sometime. He lives in the Bronx, and the only other Dartmouth person he ever sees is Larry Clark '77, who lives near him, in Harlem.

Sterling Edmonds gave a clinic in basketball in France with Gary Walters after graduation. Then he played basketball with the "Berck Basket Club" in France for three years, the third year as a player/ coach. After France, he played professionally in Monthey, Switzerland, for four years, the second two years as a player/ coach. When he left for Europe, he had had one year of Rassias-method French but now is fluent as he had to coach in French in both countries. While he was living in Europe, he came home to Norfolk, Va., summers and over Christmas. At home he met his wife, Regina, whom he married in 1982. He has now hung up his sneakers and is "retired," working as a bank manager at First Virginia Bank of Tidewater. Regina is a schoolteacher working on her master's in early childhood education.

In addition to calling Murphy and Edmonds, I called Geoffrey Martz, lanMcColough, Donald McQueen, JohnMoriarty, and Robert Coburn, none of whom were home. I also tried to reach Geoffrey Moore, but he has moved to New Jersey. I managed to reach WalterCallender, but he refused to give me any news, promising to send me something next month. News of all of these people would be welcome.

Todd Anderson, class president, is looking for a reunion chairperson for our upcoming 10th reunion. Any volunteers?
