An organization called the Alumni Committee for a Strong Dartmouth is challenging the reelection of the two Alumni Trustees whose terms expire in June. Renominated by the Alumni Council to serve second five-year terms on the Board were Robert Field '43 and Ronald Schram '64. The ACSD, headed by S. Avery Raube '30, has collected the 250 signatures required by the Alumni Association constitution to nominate two alternate candidates Daniel Provost '41 and Steven Kelley '81.
A second alumni committee, also entirely independent of the College, has been formed to promote the candidacies of the two incumbent Trustees, Field and Schram. Known as Alumni for Dartmouth, the group is chaired by former Trustee Berl Bernhard '51; other officers are Tom Gerber '43 and John Clark '62.
Provost, recently retired as vice president, public affairs, of Grand Met USA (formerly Liggett Group), is president of '41 and formerly was class agent and vice president. He is running against Schram, a Trustee since 1981, a partner in the Boston law firm of Ropes and Gray, and a former club president, class president, newsletter edit or, and reunion co-chairman.
Kelley, a syndicated cartoonist for The San DiegoUnion, as an undergraduate cartooned for The Dartmouth and The Dartmouth Review and was a member of the track team. He is challenging Field, recently retired as a partner in the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. Field has been a Trustee since 1981 and is currently serving as acting vice president and treasurer of the College.
Ballots will be mailed to alumni on April 21 and are due back in Hanover by May 17. Overseeing the election is a committee chaired by Robert Wilkinson '50, president of the Association of Alumni, and including Paul Sanderson '52, Elizabeth Knight '81, and, as secretary pro tern, Alden Guild '52.
