James F. Poage, who has been director of Princeton's computer center for 15 years, has been named viceprovost for computing at Dartmouth. He succeeds William Y. Arms, now vicepresident for information systems at Carnegie-Mellon University.
College provost Agnar Pytte cites both Poage's academic credentials and his practical skills. A 1955 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton, Poage also holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton.
Poage began his career at Bell Laboratories as a member of the technical staff and in 1963 was named supervisor for programming language research. Five years later, he was made chief of Bell Labs' computing technology department.
Since 1970, Poage has been head of Princeton's computer center. Under his direction, the university developed a computer graphics laboratory and improved user services and communications.
Poage is no stranger to Dartmouth. He has a son in the class of 1987, and his family, he says, has "a long- standing affection for New Hampshire."
