Among the class's physical fitness fanatics are Jon Halverson, Dave Harrison and Jack Hodgson. Together with Jake Haertl, '61, this team of hale and hearty H's participated in Washington's annual Ski to Sea Race, an 86-mile relay from Mt. Baker in the Cascades to Puget Sound. Jon was the cross-country skier, Jake the downhill skier, Dave pedaled, and Jack paddled. Jack's note failed to mention how or if they placed in the event. Perhaps at our age, the "doing" is all that's important.

Among the class's million-mile air travelers are Max Eveleth and Bob Farmer. Together with Ralph Fifield '46, this trio are directors of CW Communications, the world's leading computer industry publishing company. Some years back, they managed to launch a joint venture with the Chinese government in the publication of China Computerworld. While attending the fifth anniversary celebration of this magazine in Beijing, China, they had some promotional photos shot for Campion's. Max, in the center, is holding his "Dartmouth" hat, stoic Chinese guard in background. The origin of Campion's hat is not revealed by the snapshot. Rumor has it the hatband label reads "Made in Taiwan." Nice work, guys.

Perhaps Dick Levy promised to spend a little less time backpacking or maybe he was simply the best man for the job. At any rate, Varian Associates recently named Dick as general manager of its radiation division in Palo Alto, which strikes me as a logical position for a Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry with a heavy marketing background! Dick has been with Varian since 1968. Maybe the chemistry is right.

Among the class' bankers, Tom Hickey and Joel Alvord have something in common. They are both presidents and chief executive officers. Tom, the number one man at First Midwest Bank of Joliet, 11., was recently named a director of First Midwest Bancorp, a bank holding company. Joe, who has been president of Hartford National Corporation, for several years, will become CEO on October 1. In addition, Joel assumed the position of chairman of the company's principal subsidiary, Connecticut National Bank. Sounds like these two are responsible for counting a lot of beans.

Among the class's high-power rifleshooters, is Art Needham alone? He would like to correspond with any classmates who share his enthusiasm for shooting such classics as Model 1903-A3 Springfield rifles in caliber .30-06. Recently, Art was shooting at a range where he bumped into George Bond '66, who signed Art's 600 yard target. Judging from the target which Art sent along, his eyesight hasn't failed like mine, nor do his hands shake. Six out of ten shots were in the 10 circle; his 89 score at 600 yards is pretty impressive to this aging, ex-2nd Armored Division rifle team coach.

Art also mentioned that he and Martha had attended the wedding of BruceHenry to Ellen Gillespie on May 17. Finally, Art responded to my May appeal to support the Alumni Fund. In part, he said "NO, NO, NO, NEVER, so long as a penny of mine might be spent to maintain CODS, the Committee on Double Stan- dards . . . when CODS decided not to punish the punks and/or hoodlums who vandalized Baker Library, that put the icing on it. A proud faculty can afford to turn down a NROTC contract that would bring the College more than ten times what I earn before taxes. The College doesn't need my few pennies as badly as I do."

[While the College did not charge any of the 21 students involved in the Baker Library incident with the specific act of "vandalism," it did charge them with violations of various other rules. The Committee on Standards found the vast majority guilty and imposed sanctions ranging up to college discipline for varying lengths of time. R. B.B.]
