Cover On this month's cover, reproduced life-size, is a page depicting the Nativity from a miniature Book of Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary, made in the late fifteenth century in the workshop of Attavante, the greatest Florentine miniaturist of his day. It is a manuscript on 194 leaves of thin uterine vellum, many richly illuminated in gold and colors, with a text written in red and black in a beautiful Roman hand, bound in red and gilt morocco. This rare volume, a recent gift to the College from Madelyn C. Hickmott, is half the size of the usual Attavante Book of Hours and is thought to be the smallest manuscript ever produced in that workshop. The cover measures just over three inches tall, and the reduction to pocket size has been so skillfully done that the script is entirely legible and the text pages still have very broad margins.
