College Hall was busier than usual on October 9. Inside the building the Central Intelligence Agency was recruiting Dartmouth undergrads. Outside College Hall some 80 students protested the visit by picketing. The protesters cited CIA operations in South Africa, Nicaragua and other locales as reasons for the protest.
A statement issued by the group asserted that "a Dartmouth student is expected to embody the principles of honor, trustworthiness and responsible behavior. The Central Intelligence Agency exists in complete opposition to these ideals." The protest was not limited to picketing. Some of the protesting students signed up for interview slots—thus taking the time away from job seekers.
