The family of the late Nelson Rockefeller '30 recently granted $750,000 to the Rockefeller Center at the College to expand programming and faculty research in the social sciences. The family challenged the College to match the gift with endowment income, and more than half of those funds have already been raised, according to Anne Peyton, associate director of capital giving. Planned projects include a biennial social sciences conference, the Nelson A. Rockefeller Symposium, and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Award, presented to a Dartmouth graduate who has done outstanding work in public service, according to Richard Winters, director of the Center.

Major expansion: Ground was broken in October for the addition to the Thayer Schoolof Engineering. When the $25 million project is completed, the physical size of thenation's oldest professional engineering school will double. The number of student andfaculty members is projected to increase by about 40 percent.
