It's always nice to get good news, and when it's not expected, it's even nicer.
Frank Davidson falls into that category. Frank writes that after years of bachelor bliss, he has succumbed to the charm and beauty of Carol Fishberg and married this delightful woman in September of 1986. (Frank also notes that this means that Bernie Siskind has lost his bet to Dan Nixon regarding Frank's marital status). Carol has her master's degrees in both French and school guidance and works in New Jersey. Frank and the new Mrs. Davidson will live in New York City, where he practices internal medicine and as Frank says, "the Nixons and the Davidsons now await the Siskinds' feast."
Art Sollitt writes from Annapolis, Md., where he and his wife, Joan, have been living since 1974 looking out onto the Chesapeake Bay. Art has been in and out of journalism since the fifties, which undoubtedly allowed him to live in the Caribbean in the sixties and then on the Chesapeake Bay. Art was highpoint champion in 1979, 1980, and 1981 for the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association in three different classes, sailing more than 3,000 miles a year to start. Art divides his time now between writing, sailing, selling yachts, and caring for the family farm in Mississippi. (Nothing like being diversified.)
Up in Binghamton, N.H., Herb and Janet Chandler have raised their three boys who have gone on to Hamilton, Colgate, and SUNY Binghamton for their further education. Herb is a civilian employee of the Air Force administering government contracts especially for the LINK flight simulator. That's a fair change-about for a classmate- who after graduation joined the U.S. Navy to serve on a troop transport to Germany. Herb and Janet, who also comes from Baltimore, were married in 1955. That and Herb's 30 years of service to the government coming up next year, put him in an enviable position. (He still has two lacrosse rackets hanging on the garage wall to remind him of the passage of time.) Gerry Coffey has been named publisher of Air Transport World, a Penton publication. Previously, Jerry served as advertising director of Penton's Industry Week magazine at the company's New York headquarters office. Jerry has been with Penton since 1962, starting as district sales manager in Pittsburgh. He is a past vice president and director of the business/professional advertising association and a past trustee of the Dartmouth Alumni Club of Monmouth County, N.J.
Bruce Berquist also spent time in the Navy, graduating from Officers Candidate School, Newport. After serving on the USS Matthews, Bruce spent his final two years teaching with the NROTC at Princeton. It was a short step from there to teach at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., which led Bruce and his wife, Betsy, to found the Baker River School in Wentworth, N.H. It gave Bruce the opportunity to experiment in education with a small coed community, and to put into effect the results of a lot of experience. The Berquists are now in Bucks County, Pa., where Bruce serves as headmaster of the Solebury School, and which has students in seventh through 12th grades. The Berquists have two daughters, both married, and a son. Bruce and Betsy spend a lot of time in Hanover, for Betsy is enrolled in the MALS program at the College. It gives Bruce the chance for that Dartmouth experience over again, but from a different perspective. (There is no end of learning either in Hanover or elsev/here educator or not.)
But for all the rest who might need additional encouragement to return to Hanover, Bill Hudson has agreed to chair the Reunion Committee for our 35th in 1989. (Not to worry if 55 and 35 don't add to 89. It's the Dartmouth way). Bill will need the usual help which the class always generates, so call 617/934—6986 or write. In addition to running the reunion, Bill's real job is manager of the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Mass. (It's nice to have talentcombined and useful.)
And finally, Joe Mathewson will take office as a Trustee of the College following the Trustee's June Meeting, which will allow Joe to be on hand for the inauguration of Dartmouth's new president.
The College is fortunate. So are we.
