Congratulations to Ed Flanders and his team for their great performance for the 1987 Alumni Fund. The class contributed $85,161, which was over $15,161 more than our allotted goal!
For the first time in 25 years, Budd and Mibs Maring missed their spring vacation in Antigua due to a health problem. They will be off to Bermuda later this summer.
On July 12 the development of a 290-unit retirement home 10 miles north of Hanover was announced. It has been in the planning stages for over a year and should be ready in two years. Lane and Betty Dwinell were at the top of the list of applicants; CurlyProsser is 16th.
Just as I was writing these notes in July, I received a telephone call that president Rick Rickenbaugh is back in a Denver hospital with another serious heart attack. He and Hilda attended the Dartmouth graduation of their granddaughter, Anne, and have reservations for our mini-reunion in Norwich, September 18-19 and Dartmouth Night in Hanover the night before the Yale game.
We have lost another of our stalwarts with the death of Wally Carr June 10 after suffering from emphysema for many years. He and Natalie operated Skylight Antiques in Amagansett, Long Island, since 1968.
Larry and Martha Kenney are being congratulated on the news that their son, Richard '70, was one of the 32 "outstandingly talented and promising individuals" to receive awards from the Mac Arthur Foundation of Chicago. The awards are now subject to federal taxes and range from $150,000 to $375,000; the top sum is given to winners 65 and over. The news appeared with a large headline in the New York Times of June 16. Richard's listing is age 38, poet, whose works include The Evolution of theFlightless Bird and Orrery.
For a '28 capsule report on Commencement, vice president Curly Prosser was there and says, "Mirabile dictu! Not protester or armband in sight. The ceremony lasted four hours—too much. Commencement speaker Senator Bradley and Prexy McLaughlin relieved some of the tedium with excellent presentations. Alumni Recorder, Nancy Elliott, who did so much for our class, was praised and applauded for her past services; she retired June 30."
Six '28 grandchildren (not 5 as reported in the summer issue) were surrounded by their grandparents and families; you'll recognize the names: Glendinning, Heston, Mann, Nova, Rickenbaugh and Thompson.
Mona Westhaver has asked to be relieved of her duties of writing to '28 widows about reunions—due to health reasons. BettyDietz has agreed to take the job of class hostess.
Our mini-reunion is September 18-19 at the Norwich Inn. You are invited to attend the class meeting Saturday at 10 a.m. followed at 11 by lunch there. If you can't stay for dinner, come to the Ranger Room at the Norwich Inn after the game—you will find a warm welcome.
