Too much last month, too little this — a midsummer situation that seems to be in peril of perpetuating itself. And isolation on North Carolina's Outer Banks for the first two weeks of August doesn't help. Fortunately, carryover material from last month provides relief. An interesting note, from Ted Harbaugh, concerns a stay with wife Kay at Trinity Evangelical School in Deerfield, Ill., for a course in Suzuki violin training. Kay has been involved for ten years in learning better teaching methods (she has 25 pupils in Toledo), and the course they are attending has some of the best Suzuki teachers in the country demonstrating how to teach fouryear-olds and their families to read music"a good program." Ted is still working with the Toledo Symphony, whose concerts for the young reached 30,000 students last year.
Dan Cotton wrote last month to state his own reservations with respect to the "brains vs. balance" issue in College admission policy, despite the reassurances in the June Bulletin as to the modest dimensions of the brains recruitment program. He agrees that a community whose students can "test themselves against the very best" is a challenging concept, but feels it would be too bad if the "special Dartmouth ambience" should be sacrificed in some intensified pursuit of excellence. "Let it become the best it can in its own right . . . exciting as hot pursuit can be, creative thought needs a more modest pace; perhaps a better world does too." Amen.
My esteemed predecessor Dick Muzzy had just returned at the end of June from "one of the most enjoyable junkets he and Polly have ever taken," courtesy of the Dartmouth and Brown Alumni College: Turkey, the Black Sea, and up the Danube to Vienna. The class was also represented by the Berkeys, Hages, Karches, and LouHawkins and was the largest class group. Highly recommended!
The Door of Learning Since he means to come to a door he will come to a door Although compromised of aim and rate He may fumble wide of the knob a yard or more And to those concerned he may seem a little late. Quoting Bill: "An example of his humor and compassion." More, hopefully, about Bill in the future. Meanwhile, peace and love to you all all y'all.
