Believe it or not, it's only eight months until the grand 35th Reunion on June 12-15, 1989. Don't say we didn't give you enough notice to block those days out on your calendar and get ready for the return to Hanover. For those of you who may have class of '89 offspring, commencement is June 11. So, you'll be in Hanover waiting for the rest of us.

Lots of news from the highways and byways. Larry Martz writes that he was disturbed by the approach used in the classmate telethon for the Alumni Fund. Apparently, whoever called him indicated that his response was being broadcast in some way to an audience of current College students. As we can well imagine, Larry didn't find this pleasing and is curious to know if others of you were solicited in the same manner. Larry suggests that if you were and found it objectionable, let the College know. Larry is senior editor of Newsweek and has recently finished writing a book on Jim and Tammy Bakker, the PTL, and the inside story of its takeover by Jerry Falwell. The book is a Book-of-the-Month Club selection and was published in September.

Neal Farrell took early retirement on August 31 as president and operating officer of the Mercantile Bancorp in St. Louis, as well as from his position as president and CEO of its Mercantile Bank unit. As of this time Neal's plans are not known. Neal has spent pretty much his whole business career with Mercantile and has been a significant part of its growth. '

Ed Horton was elected vice president of the American Diabetes Association for 1988-89. Ed is professor of medicine and chairman of the department of medicine at the University of Vermont. Ed's numerous professional activities display devotion to the cause of diabetes research and care. He has been a member of several national committees and has been a member of the board and chair of the research committee and currently chairman of the Diabetes Association's Council on Exercise.

Jack Reilly was elected to the board of the Massachusetts Electric Company. Jack is president and CEO of Fred C. Church, Inc., of Lowell, a major insurance brokerage firm. Jack and Elaine are the parents of six children, two of whom are still home. Jack is chairman of the board of trustees of St. John's Hospital in Lowell, trustee and member of the board of investment of the Central Savings Bank, director of the Lowell Boys Club, and director of the New England Insurance Company. He has certainly worked to make his community better.

Congratulations to Doug Dodge who has been elected chairman of the Goucher College board of trustees. His term as chairman of the 48-member board, which he has served since 1983, is for three years. Doug has been with the Mercantile Safe-Deposit and Trust Company since 1969 and is now president and vice chairman of the Mercantile Bankshares Corporation. He has been an active member of the Baltimore community, serving on the boards of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Monumental Life Insurance Company, Union Memorial Hospital, and the United Way.

Keep writing all those good things. We need all the news we can get.
