An agreement signed by Dartmouth College and the University of Japan calls for both schools to develop a master's degree program based on the Tuck School curriculum. Tuck will arrange for American faculty (including some of the school's own members) to teach in Japan. "This arrangement provides unparalleled opportunities for both the United States and Japanese faculties to merge the best of business education with management expertise," said Tuck Dean Colin C. Blaydon.

Why would the Japanese want to study business from Americans? "That's the way they work," explained a Dartmouth official who was involved in the negotiations. "The more they understand American business, the more business they do in America. On the other hand," the official added, "maybe we'll learn a thing or two by teaching over there."

Anna Pytte, wife of the former Dartmouth provost, suggested a name for the new venture: Nippon Tuck.
