When it became known that Dartmouth was matched against against nineteenthranked lowa on January 23, most people expected the Big Green to be overwhelmed by the Hawkeyes. But the final score—lowa 102, Dartmouth 87—didn't do justice to the quality effort put on by Dartmouth. lowa coach Tom Davis said, "I told the players afterwards that it's kind of a shame that a lot of people who weren't here are going to think it was a fairly easy 'W'. We all know it was anything but that."
Indeed it wasn't. At times during the first half, Dartmouth led by as many as 11 points. The second quarter ended with a 53-53 tie. With just 7:18 remaining in the game, Dartmouth trailed 83-81.
Daily Dartmouth sports columnist Michael Hoag was one of more than 500 people who watched the contest on a closedcircuit television system set up in Webster Hall. He wrote: "I went to this game thinking Dartmouth was just a mediocre Division I team, but now I realize they are much more than that. They showed the confidence and dignity which should make the Dartmouth community proud."
