Report from the Council
MARCH 1988

I start this report with the reminder that anyone who wishes to receive a copy of the minutes from our December Alumni Council meeting, as reported in last month's issue, can do so by writing the Alumni Affairs Office, 304 Blunt Alumni Center, Hanover, NH 03755. These minutes are quite extensive and informative for any alumnus/a having an interest in Council operations.

This month I wish to highlight two more standing committees of the Council, as reported by their current chairmen: COMMITTEE ON ATHLETICS

The Council's Committee on Athletics acts as an advisory board to the Dartmouth College Athletic Council and as such has three primary roles:

1. To advise the DCAC, through alumni input, on athletic related matters.

2. To serve as liaison between the DCAC and the Alumni Council and to coordinate programs of mutual concern.

3. To broaden the alumni base of understanding of the intramural, physical education, and intercollegiate athletic programs.

Consistent with the Council's theme of "Challenges of the Nineties," the Committee on Athletics this year is focusing on the competitiveness of Dartmouth athletics. The discussions will involve both the competitiveness of Dartmouth within the Ivy League and the competitiveness of the Ivy League within the NCAA. The December meeting focused primarily on the men's and women's basketball programs (with head coaches Paul Cormier and Jacqueline Hullah as guest speakers). The theme of the June meeting will be "The Future of Dartmouth Football" (with head coach Buddy Teevens '79 as guest speaker).

In addition to addressing this year's theme, the Committee on Athletics regularly reviews all of the intercollegiate and physical education programs as well as alumni fund raising efforts (e.g., the Sponsors Program).

Members of the Committee on Athletics: Christopher Jenny '77, Chair Laurence Leavitt '25 Moe Frankel '34 James Tindle '36 Peter Brown '49 William Carpenter '50 Frank Harrington Jr. '50 William Montgomery '52 Stephen Mullins '54 Eugene Givens '55 Douglas Keare '56 Andrew DuBoff '59 John Hessler '59 Allen Stowe '60 Kenneth DeHaven '61 Ronald Wybranowski '61 William Whaley '62 Murry Bowden '71 Thomas Eggleston '74 Cheryl Bascomb '82 William Keating '88 Kathryn Beierle '89 Edward Leland, Secretary COMMITTEE ON COMMUNICATIONS

This committee provides a review forum of all aspects of the College's many forms of external communication for the Council. It provides committee members with the opportunity to keep abreast of these communications channels and to suggest changes or new ideas where necessary. Members of the current Communications Committee:

Wayne Givens '60, Chair Milton Mclnnes '30 Robert Fernald '36 Peter Brown '49 Frank Harrington '50 Henry Sanders '51 William Montgomery '52, Vice Chair William Hartley '58 Robert Johnson '59 William Whaley '62 John Hosmer '65 Donald Graves '66 Thomas Jackson '71 Stuart Simms '72 Nancy Kepes Jeton '76 Celia Chen '78 Mardy Cornish, Secretary

At its December 1987 meeting the committee heard updates on changes to the Alumni Magazine, new class newsletter guidelines, a new parents' newsletter, and recent releases by the College News Service. The committee reviewed the first new videotape of the "Dartmouth Today" series and endorsed this concept as an excellent communications vehicle to the Alumni Council.

A copy of this first tape has been distributed to all members of the Council to help promote the concept. In addition, a proposal for an alumni attitude survey was presented to the committee, and it was decided that more information was required before making a recommendation.

Effective communications will be an ongoing challenge for the staff at Dartmouth, but this committee is very encouraged by the leadership already being provided by President Freedman in this important area.

Next month two more committees will be reviewed.

President, Alumni Council
