Must mention the passing last autumn of Doug Wade, College Naturalist when we '48s were undergrads. Doug joined us on many of those marvelous DOC trips to the mountains and lakes of the North Country where he became a lasting friend to many of us. A1 Gustafson is supporting Dave Kendall '45 in working up a memorial to Doug's memory in Hanover.
what would befall us. Somewhere in the address, however, just as Dirk admitted being a little perturbed about what he could see of our futures, his sturdy charger discharged a collection of field oysters on the ground which were noted by all and just missed Dirk's foot. Without batting an eye, Dirk quickly pointed out, "See, even my horse has indigestion!" Dirk died last November when his plane failed by 40 feet to clear the southeast ridge of Dorset Mountain just south of Rutland. We still don't know just what happened.
Dr. Howie Westney has a farm in Vermont only three miles from Dorset Mountain and sees two other '48s often in Schenectady. Dr. Harry Wood is chief of the medical staff at Bellevue Hospital, while John Fenno of nearby Canajoharie is chief of purchasing at the same institution. John says he loves the region because of skiing in the winter and sailing in the summer. (Was his son, Chris '72, the first '48 offspring to enter Dartmouth?) Harry thinks back to Hanover with nostalgia. He remembers the room he and Phil Gahm occupied just inside the front door of Wheeler, remembers seeing physiology Professor Forester out on Oak Hill one cold winter afternoon, the latter skiing while formally dressed in black suit, fedora, and long overcoat (no spats).
Wes advises that a daughter is engaged to marry a son of Ferd Nadherney, the famous Yale basketballer who came with his team to Hanover a number of years ago and became the object of Eleazar's new student body yell, "Go, Na-a-d! Go, Na-a-d!"—a chant which decisively turned the tide and won the game for the Green. We guess that old Nad probably feels that if you can't beat 'em, join em!
By the time these notes hit the street the '48 Fortieth will be only months off. Reunion chair Bud Gedney is confident a darn good time will be had by all June 13-17 at our old alma mater. We'll have Fayerweather Row to ourselves plus a huge tent. Joe Smith will be official greeter and checker-inner when we arrive Monday morning. Plenty of time to relax, chew the fat, and laugh over old times accompanied by a few drams of John Barleycorn—set off by one or two rousing seminars, picnics, etc. And our own Rev. Lou Springsteen will lead a memorial service for those '4B pals who have left this world, 56 as I make the count today. Bud estimates about 60 '48s will be there, plus wives, etc. Miss it and you don't like a good time with old friends.
