ROBBINS BARSTOW '41, "Meet the Great Ones: An Introduction to Whales and Other Cetaceans" (Cetacean Society International)—Barstow, a leader in whale conservation efforts and a former director of professional development for the Connecticut Education Association, has turned his love for whales, dolphins, and porpoises into a handy guide for the general public, students, and teachers.

SAMUEL C. FLORMAN '46, "The Civilized Engineer" (St. Martin's Press)— Time magazine applauds this engaging book by civil engineer Florman as "a useful read for engineers given to selfscrutiny and a stimulating one for the layman interested in the ancient schism between machines and men's souls." Florman reflects on his Dartmouth days as he argues for the civilization of engineers through education in the liberal arts.

CARL V. GRANGER '49, "Primary Care of the Functionally Disabled: Assessment and Management" (Lippincott)— A professor of rehabilitation medicine at the School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo and head of the rehabilitation department at Buffalo General Hospital, Granger co-authored (with Gary Seltzer and Carol Farb Fishbein) this clinical guide for physicians.

RICHARD H. HOOKE '53, "Blowing in the Wind: How to Make Your Own Wind-Powered Folk Art Figures" (Down East Books)—This well-illustrated book is all you need to learn how to make intriguing whirligigs. Hooke, who has taught at New England College and England's Exeter College of Art, directs the crafts program at Timberlake Summer Camp in Plymouth, Vermont, when not sculpting, making whirligigs, or teaching woodwork in his Amherst, Mass., studio.

ROBERT D. LEFFERT '55, "Brachial Plexus Injuries" (Churchill Livingstone) —A well-illustrated monograph for care-providers and specialists in brachial plexus injuries. Leffert, associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School and a surgical chief at Massachusetts General Hospital, calls upon his own clinical experience and incorporates the findings of pioneering French researchers.

RICHARD B. ROBERTS '55, "Infectious Diseases: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Therapy" (Year Book Medical Publishers) —Physician Roberts, a professor of medicine at the Cornell University Medical College in New York, used the most freqently repeated questions from his medical students of the last 15 years as the impetus for his interdisciplinary technical text aimed at medical student and physician alike.

TOM KRAMPF '56, "Satori West" (Ischua Books)— Poet Krampf explains that "a satori is a Zen Buddhist moment of revelation." An example is his "Life Satori," which reads, " 'I always look for bargains.' "

DONALD C. BROSS '64 and Laura Free Freeman Michaels, eds., "Foundations of Child Advocacy: Legal Representation for the Maltreated Child" (Bookmakers Guild)—Executive director of the National Association of Counsel for Children, legal counsel to the C. Henry Kempe National Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and associate professor in pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Bross has co-edited a book providing guidance for guardians representing abused and neglected children in court proceedings. The book, intended for both lawyer and non-lawyer, includes discussion of the roles of attorneys, caseworkers, and pediatricians in maltreatment cases.

Francis J. Manasek, "Dartmouth 1874 Hanover, N.H." (G.B. Manasek, Inc., Hanover)—At $925 for each of the 425 copies printed, this album of 21 photographs reproduced from the originals of Montrealer William McFarlane Notman is a true collector's item. Manasek is a professor in the department of anatomy at the Dartmouth Medical School and a purveyor of rare books.
