I wish to remind all councilors and former councilors that the 156th meeting of the Alumni Council will be held in Hanover June 2-4. It should be another lively meeting, with the theme "The Image of Dartmouth."
We have three committees to highlight this month, with summaries prepared by their chairs:
COMMITTEE ON ALUMNI AWARDS
The major function of this committee is to evaluate candidates and choose recipients for the Alumni Award, the highest recognition bestowed by the Council. The award honors alumni 25 years or more after graduation who have rendered continuous and outstanding service to the College across a broad spectrum of activities, have achieved distinction in their careers, and have participated extensively in public or community service in a manner that reflects positively on the value of a Dartmouth education.
This is a standing committee of the Council that meets a minimum of three times a year. This year it is composed of six past members of the Council, each a past recipient of the award, a present member of the Council, the Council president and secretary, each ex-officio. The first of now 323 Alumni Awards was presented to President Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins '01 in 1954. In succeeding years, an average of six to ten alumni have been recognized. The committee welcomes suggestions of candidates who meet the criteria.
Members of the committee are: John H. Hatheway '48, Chair Robert W. MacMillen '40 Robert D. Brace '52 Frederick H. Stephens Jr. '53 Richard M. Page '54 Josiah Stevenson IV '57 John B. Nason '59 The President of Council Michael Choukas Jr. '51, Secretary
COMMITTEE ON BEQUESTS AND TRUSTS
This committee has as its primary responsibility the oversight of the College's Bequests and Trusts Program, now in its 38th year. The program, which was inaugurated by the Alumni Council, encourages alumni, wives, and other family members, to support Dartmouth's long-term endowment and plant needs by means of bequest provisions, charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities, life insurance, and other socalled "planned gifts."
The committee is functionally separate from the Association of Class Bequest Chairmen, which is composed of 54 class volunteers who represent the various interests of the program within their respective classes.
At its December 1987 meeting, the committee received staff reports on several subjects, including six-month program receipts, recent publications, and special promotional efforts and class projects. The committee also heard a presentation by Vice President and Treasurer Robert Field and Director of Investments Bruce Dresner on the types of investments managed for and by the College, induding those pertaining to charitable life income plans created by donors for the ultimate benefit of the College. Their presentation included a particular reference to the October 19 stock market debacle and the period of instability which followed it.
The members of the committee are: Allen S. Brush '35, Chair John B. Whitman '46, Vice Chair William B. Sleigh '25 Milton G. Mclnnes '30 George H. Colton '35 Lem W. Bowen '37 John S. Cumming Jr. '39 Stephen S. Hull '45 Townes M. Harris Jr. '47 John W. Hessler '59 Ronald S. London '67 Frank A. Logan '52, Secretary Angus M. Russell '52, Associate Secretary
COMMITTEE ON HONORARY DEGREES
This committee makes recommendations to the College Council on Honorary Degrees of alumni who are worthy of consideration for an honorary degree. The College Council is the recommending agency for all candidates, and makes its recommendations to the Board of Trustees who then make the final selection.
Dartmouth seeks to honor men and women who have made outstanding contributions on the regional, national, or international scene to intellectual or spiritual life, the arts, the professions, business and industry, or to public service in the broadest sense. Degrees awarded include doctorates of arts, laws, letters, literature, divinity, humane letters, science, and engineering.
The committee solicits names from alumni councilors and from the class officers of the 50th Reunion class. It welcomes, and regularly receives, suggested names from all sources. The work of the committee is done in the spring and summer preceding the commencement at which the awards are to be made. Suggestions may be sent to any member of the committee or directly to the Alumni Affairs Office c/o Mrs. Pat Downing.
