President Freedman, seeking the "chance to be more deeply involved in the educational processes of Dartmouth," has upgraded the position of provost to that of chief academic officer. At a faculty meeting held in May, Freedman said he was frustrated with the number of managerial duties he had had to assume. "I had the chance to be a manager at the University of Iowa," he said, noting the university's ten graduate schools and 30,000 students. "One reason I came here was the focus on undergraduate education." Having a chief academic officer, he maintained, would "permit me to most effectively discharge my responsibilities as an educator."
