With regrets we record the I passing of Frank Davis in California on July 13 and Dick Hawkins in New Hampshire on July 17. (Obituaries will follow.) Dave Lilly received the Urban Beautification Award from the American Horticulture Society at an awards banquet on July 29 in Minneapolis, Minn. The award recognizes a significant contribution by an individual toward urban horticulture. Dave was credited with having radically changed the style of the American garden through his chairmanship of a fine arts commission during his tenure as a governor of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C.
We heard from Bill Tucker who writes that he and Beryl missed our 50th due to a month spent in Europe—London, Istanbul, and Florence, with stops in between. Tuck reports that he still enjoys downhill skiing and a combination of country and city living. Janie Chivers writes that due to a prior commitment she had to miss our mini in September, but will be in residence henceforth.
We have been delinquent in not heretofore reporting the passing of Mary Pyrtek, Joe's life-time helpmate, on April 14, 1989, in Hartford, Conn.
We note by the latest from Hanover that as of July 10 our class has picked up some additional gifts bringing our 50th Reunion total to $831,650, with 301 men, or 87 percent, contributing. Although considerably shy of our one-million goal, it still represents a tidy sum, and most certainly the highest mark ever for 1939.
In closing we might mention that your scribe and wife are just back from a splendid two-week cruise along the coast of Norway to the North Cape (which we were surprised to learn is well north of the latitude of Greenland and Iceland). We arrived home in time for me to keep an appointment with an eye doctor who took care of a cataract and presented us with an implant scheduled, we hope, to bring back an element of sharpness lost on the tennis courts of late.
