Last month we talked about teaching. Well, what about sitting in front of the teacher now? Lots of folks tell me the Elderhostel program provides the answer. Mayo and BemiceCohen told us at Reunion about their fine experience last summer —a week each in Denmark, Norway, Sweden—and they are planning a sequel. Anyone else take such a fascinating course?

For those who keep up-to-date at their libraries you'll now find William S. Emerson in Who's Who in the World, 1989-90 as well as in Who's Who in the East. Congratulations, Bill!

Looking at the 1989 Directory, where is our primary residence now compared to 30 years ago? Here are the top states for '34 and how they changed. Massachusetts is now first with 47 (net loss of eight), and, to no one's surprise, Florida is second with 44 (gain of 31). New York has 38 (down 20), Connecticut 26 (down eight). New Hamp- shire climbed to 20 (up 13). Then come Illinois and California with 17, New Jersey with 15, Ohio still has ten, Pennsylvania and Virginia have eight.

If you want to be a pioneer, there are ten states where no '34 resides, but just West Virginia and Alabama are east of the Mississippi. Compared to 1959, Walt Blood maae Arkansas show positive, Jeff Jackson did that for New Mexico, and Ralph Brab-bee for Mississippi. Harry Espenscheid has stayed in Illinois and is one of the few farmers we have grown. He says it's okay to tag him a horse buff, too. It's a Tennessee Walker when trotting his expanded farm, and a Peruvian Paso when in Santa Barbara.

Remember those Reunion '34 caps? They triggered two happy summer encounters for me. In Stockbridge, Mass., as I looked across the street at a walking tour group, hands started waving. Jack and Rita Corcoran had spotted the '34. Wonderful! ... Then on another trip while stopped at a light in Orleans, Mass., a car window rolled down. There were Bill and Jane Daniells.I followed and had a chance to chat at their nice summer place, right across the cove from where the Bill Schermans used to live and I met their great-grandchild. (Her name is Cassandra Yale, but the Daniellses are planning for her to be Dartmouth '09.) Keep your '34 cap handy and wear it.
