NEWS FROM THE BACK NINE. A note from Charles (Hitch/Charlie/ Whatever)Hitchcock reports the peregrinations of the peripatetic golfing group of which he is a participating patron. At last word, the group was scheduled to play at Madison, Conn., with Ben Walkley as host.
On a whim, a check of the 50th Reunion class book revealed that Ben, erstwhile (quite erst) commander in U.S. Naval Aviation, was courting the computer business after having retired as data processing manager for Borden Chemical Division.
A farther check—this one of the November 1939 Class Notes column—finds Ben with Smith Barney in New York. Maybe he took a flyer or two at that estimable corporate entity before discovering the virtues of the real thing navy style.
DO YOU REMEMBER? With the November 1939 Column (we're still in the 50year mode) as a source, this item turned up: Whitey Mays became engaged —an event that brought a comment from then secretary, Baron VonPechmann. To quote: "Can you imagine this kid being married? You can't escape the draft that way, fella."
The question is, how many of us remember being concerned with the draft that early? And by how many was the legendary "Greetings!" message received?
VIRTUE IS ITS OWN REWARD DEP'T. In one golden oldie story, an angel appears on the steps of a major cathedral and tells a young priest to expect a visit from the Lord, momentarily. In panic, the young prelate rushes to the cardinal, and breath- lessly breaks the news, adding, "What do we do?" The cardinal, wise in the ways of both sacred and profane disciplines, replies soothingly, "Look busy!"
In the absence of hard news, here is a look-busy item: the following, not having been in contact with this column, are mentioned simply because their names, printed in bold type, should convey a sense of vigorous class activity. So, selected at random, and extending across the continent, are: Bull Adams of South Carolina; SandyMills of Colorado Springs, Colo.; JohnTower of Ridgefield, Conn.; Bruce Lemmon of Springfield, Miss.; Dick Nelson of Corona Del Mar, Calif.; and Ross Borneman of Paradise Valley, Ariz.
Needed: volunteers to populate Nevada and New Mexico where the class has no current representation.
CONFIDENTIAL MEMO TO MINIREUNION ATTENDERS. Send your version of the events at and reactions to the first gathering of the season. Cruise Director Dick Francis, it has been whispered, has a reporting system with a fail-safe positive key locked in position. Seriously, it would be interesting to hear what regulars and newcomers have to say about these reunions, and it could inspire more of us to attend the next ones.
