TOWER POWER. The Fiftieth Anything (a reunion, e.g.) is an impressive event. But a Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary is awesome. To some. However it's real life romance for John andShirley Tower, who are celebrating theirs this year by recapturing the rapture in such exotic isles as St. Martin and St. Barts in Caribbean waters. Way to go!
John gets up to Hanover from time to time by way of Canaan, N.H., where he does his duty as trustee of Cardigan Mountain School. Next on the Towers' itinerary: golf in South Carolina, where, it is rumored, nothing could be finer.
INSPIRATION. A brief chat with WaltDunlap reveals that he is, in his words, earthbound. He may be, but his spirit soars. Walt volunteered the fact that he was imminently due for chemotherapy in much the same tone as others might announce a visit to the corner store. What a guy!
NOBLE EFFORT. Three hundred (300) churches and one (1) Roy Chamberlain are joined in a Just Peace Task Force dedicated to the Integrity of Creation, Justice and Peace. If jumbled notes have been properly deciphered, Roy is a moving force for the United Church of Christ in upstate New York, where he is deeply involved in the Campaign for Global Security. In Hanover now and then, he sees Dave Bradley and Ev Wood.
QUICK TAKES. Out California way, Dick Nelson is living the good life, enjoying his eight grandchildren and his 28-foot Cheoy Lee trawler. Dick's oldest grandchild is soon to graduate from Berkeley. That means that future columns will be recording the advent and progress of—are you ready for this? great-grandchildren.
Dick is a regular attendee at Orange County Dartmouth Club luncheons, but seems to be the sole '38er on scene.
SON OF FLETCHER. Pat Gorman has come up with the definitive answer to the question, "Who was Fletcher really?"' According to Pat, Gil Tanis had it right. Fletcher, first name Jim, was "a gaptoothed, florid-faced character of medium height... (who) dressed like an unmade bed .. . He was never without a very positive opinion on almost any topic ... (He was) a Hanover fixture." With this, Fletcher returns to his initially described role as sometime golf trophy.
In a concluding item, Pat notes that Peteand Trudy Talbot have just about completed the third home they have designed themselves—this one in Santa Fe.
