The majority of this month's news comes to you from Homecoming Weekend 1988. I always get a kick out of going back to campus as a genuine alumnus and walking around without worrying about being late for a class or getting change to do laundry before the bank closes. It reminded me of tne nearly constant hurry that I was in for four years as a student. If you haven't been back since Commencement, you should give it a try.
Homecoming was as busy as always, what with a bonfire built of environmentally safe (yet totally flame-retardant) railroad ties, another edition of the world's only parade held at night, and a remarkable trouncing of Harvard on the football field. For those of you who are wondering, the freshmen ('92 can you believe that?) did storm the field after the game and constructed perhaps the most illegible numerals ever to grace Alumni Field. Of course, they haven't been allowed to practice much, have they?
The next major step down the road of alumness (alumnitude?) must be bringing one's children to Dartmouth reunions. Although I know of no new class babies, two more weddings have come to my attention. On September 10, Anne Schnader and Greg Jones were married on Long Island. Witnesses from the class included SallyDunn, John Hwang, Elizabeth Weidberg, Jennifer Tisdel, Erik Knutson, and Lynn Mahoney.
Two weeks later and about 4,500 miles away, Tracey Kloeckl wed Francisco Heredia in Almunecar, Spain. The couple returned to the U.S. in December and are living in Arlington, Minn.
I had a chance to catch up with fellow Streeter Hall Survivor Mike Roy at school. Mike spent a year teaching in Manchester, Conn., and was in Hanover to run in a crosscountry race. A few weeks later, he was off to South America with a friend for a couple of months of travel. Mike promised to steer clear of any countries experiencing revolution or other violent forms of social unrest. Other than that, his itinerary was open.
When last we heard from Abdhish Bhavsar, he was explaining a dead car battery to one of Nantucket's finest at four in the morning. Well, Abdhish has straightened up his act a bit. He finished his first year of medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit in the top fifth of his class, and he was named this year as a member of the school admissions committee. Aspiring doctors will no doubt keep in touch with Abdhish.
In the well-deserved recognition department (OK, so it's a new department), the 1988 Alumni Fund figures shine brightly on the class of '87. Nearly 75 percent of the class gave to the Fund last year. The 735 donors represent a school record for any class in its first year out. To a large degree, we owe our thanks to head agents ChrisSullivan and Mary Halpin for organizing the Senior Pledge Program and class donations in general. For their efforts, Chris and Mary were awarded the Class of 1953 Award for greatest number of donors and the Charles J. Zimmerman Award for the highest rate of participation of a class one to four years out.
