MARCH 1989 Richard S. Jackson,

Moments before our deadline we learned from Jack Coulson of the passing of his old roomie, Doug Farrington, on December 26. Doug and Grace were visiting his daughter in Glendora, N.J., just a few days previous to a planned stay in Florida. In the same mail the College advised of the death of Royal Hassrick on December 20 at his home in Walpole, N.H. (Obits in this or a fohowing issue.)

An earlier Christmas season passing occurred on November 30, when Jack Cumming's wife, Lil, succumbed to the dreaded disease, cancer, after a long and lingering battle. Lil was very active in Providence community affairs and will be sorely missed.

On a slightly more cheerful note, two old buddies got together at the Hartford Hospital when surgeon Joe Pyrtek took the scalpel to Harry Gates's intestines in early December. The operation was proclaimed a success and Harry is off to Atlanta for the winter where he has a number of friends from his schoolteaching days in that city. While incarcerated under Joe's care, the two did their share of reminiscing .and were joined one day by Bill Hutchinson '40, who stopped in to add his two cents. We have a picture of the pair, but unfortunately the shot was not sharp enough for reproduction in this journal.

Buzz and Janie Waters took a threeweek Grand Circle Tour of Portugal this past fall, hitting Cascais, Algarve, and Madeira. After catching up on the mail they were off to Florida for another three weeks before returning home to spend Christmas in Hartford.

After reviewing mini-reunion pictures in "39-Out" Sam Dix suggests prominent name-tags for the June reunion. He says that we've changed since the 15th. Sam says he's planning to buy a wig.

Bob Schill, in responding to a birthday card from his home in Rutland, Vt., says that, like most of us, he is now retired but keeps active with a teaching spot at a nearby college, and visits with his family in Virginia and Massachusetts.

"I am guilty of sending the Honduran postcard to Davidson," says Bruce Learned, finally cleansing his conscience. "If, by chance, you are offered a 30-day tour of Honduras, be sure it's going to be in Tegucigalpa, because there ain't very much in the boondocks (which is naturally where I did my tour!)." Bruce reports also that he and Cusi are grandparents for the seventh time. Six are males and one a female, which he believes is fitting in that he had seven daughters and three sons.

Bill and Robilee Tompkins took a little time off from the reunion fund drive effort. They went off to England in the fall for four weeks. They report that John Sinclair's son is the president of the Dartmouth Club of London.
