At least two '48s put their shoulders to the wheel in raising funds and arranging aid from the USA to Soviet Armenia after the devastating earthquake last December. Shant Chebookjian of Massachusetts and Charlie Zoolalian of California—both of Armenian descentsaid the main worry was being sure the tons of accumulated relief supplies got where they were needed. Shant, who knew Charlie when the latter lived in Belmont years ago, as well as at Dartmouth, said there were still plane loads to go; Charlie pointed out that there are more Armenians in California than anywhere in the world outside Russian Armenia. Shant left Polaroid and formed his own agency, Fremont Travel, six years ago at Waltham's Main Street and Route 128 near Boston, where he urges any '48s to stop by. Charlie is still in education in the Whittier area. A tip of Eleazar's stein to these men of Dartmouth! Shant sends best regards to old roommate Dave Karukin in Bangkok and to Woody Kirschbaum in St. Louis.
Bob Bastian, formerly of frigid Chicago, is one more of many '48s who nave headed south to retire. Bob says that when the Chicago temperature fell to minus 27° two winters ago he decided to pull stakes and find a place where he could play golf anytime. He found it at Skidaway Island at the edge of Savannah, where six great golf courses are within a drive and a wedge of his house. Bob sees Town Crier Chuck Witherspoon's name in the local paper, and sends his regards to old buddy Bob Douglas of Houston. Perhaps other accomplished '48 linksmen such as Joe Luyckx of Detroit, Phil Ruegger of Metuchen, Ken Saunders of Chicago, Ken Young of Fort Myers, and Rog Zorn of Lexington will stop by to test Bob's setup and hospitality.
You probably noted that Bill Hartwig's daughter Karen '90 played a great goalie for Dartmouth's champion field hockey team last fall, while Dick Leggat's son Robbie was a hard-driving halfback on the freshman football team.
Charley Herterich's widow, Jacqueline, has completed the dream house they had planned at Fernandina Beach in the northeast knob of Florida. She invites old friends of Charley to stop by for some great fishing on their way to or from further south. With Bastian just north and Rick Landon plus John Warden's widow, Joyce, just to the south at Ormond Beach, Jackie's in a strong '48 beach area. So '48s should take advantage of their presence and their hospitality.
Dartmouth's Alumni Fund Committee has awarded official congratulations to Marve Axelrod, '48 chief agent, and to Jim McLaughlin, '48 reunion gift chairman, for the work they did in last year's drive in which a new dollar record was set by the class and in which the number of '48 givers was exceeded only once before. Barney Hoisington, the College's former chief of financial aid to students, has got to be proud of his classmates!
Must repeat my best laugh of 1988. It came to us both when John Cameron told me he had waited six hours in the White River railroad station for the train to Norwich where his Navy V-12 orders told him to get off on his first trip to Hanover in 1942! Got any others? Please let me know so we all can enjoy them.
