MARCH 1989 Chuck Young,

Some months this job isn't very easy; no one writes, no one calls, and you have to schlep all over the AT&T grief to find news. This month, however, isn't one of those months. Lots of letters, but two in particular that read like miniature Class Notes columns in and of themselves. One was a four-page epistle from Ted Waters, "an '88 in heart, thought, news, and year of graduation." Ted gets around like you wouldn't believe; he's spent the past six months or so traveling around applying to med schools and thus informs us of our classmates who are pursuing that course of study. Hong Jin Kim and Dave Hirsch showed Ted the social options available at Virginia Med, and Ted learned that Hong Jin is popular with one of the nursing sororities.

Tom Kollmorgen, who's at lowa Med, and Bill Faubion, down at Houston Med, also reported in good condition. According to Ted, Bill took a day off from studying and wound up 1,000 pages behind in his reading. Michelle Stowe is reportedly not behind at all down at Emory Med in Atlanta, and neither are Bryan Weidner and Sue Rheingold, who are at Penn.

Ted himself lives up here in Lyme Center presently. I'll sprinkle in more news from his letter in later columns; there's enough for three or four months, and I'd hate to blow it all in one place. The other letter that will serve as fertile ground for some time to come was a two-page typed missive on green paper with classmates' names coveniently written in ALL CAPS by Sandy Broadus. Sandy is in Brooklyn, working in the litigation department of Davis Polk and Wardwell and volunteering as an advocate at the Legal Aid Society in Harlem. Sandy's firm closed litigation involving the Manville Corp. bankruptcy in November with the help of Robin Kass, then moved on to the Allis-Chalmers case with Lisa Getter. Also working at Davis Polk are Jody Washburn, Gale Beckles, Betsy McCooe, Bob Striker, and Jennifer Taylor. "The office is a veritable cornucopia of '88s," Sandy writes, and she's correct.

Outside the office, Sandy writes that she's seen Jennie Arlin and Sam Braverman; the three went to dinner recently and Sam, "with his customary smoothness, showed up with roses for both of us," Sandy said. Hey, I just quote 'em. That troika then hooked up with John Kennedy for a trip up for Homecoming; "We were stuck in New York traffic at 8:00 p.m. Friday night, but not to worry... the bonfire was still intact."

Got a neat Christmas card (yeah, I know what month it is, but I have a crazy deadline) from Charlie Wheelan and Leah Yegian. They spent the holidays in Singapore, after making their way through Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, and Indonesia. Next up for them: Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Nepal, India, Kuwait, Turkey, and Western Europe.

The last item in the mailbag for this month was a letter from California State Senator Quentin Kopp, who moonlights as secretary of the class of '49. Not knowing that at first, I immediately wondered what heinous act of mine had prompted an official letter. I opened it only to find that he was writing to tell me of a couple of Green alums he'd seen in China: Kate Phillips-eaching English in Beijing with Peter Bogardus '87 Thanks for some good news, Senatorand a good scare.
