It seems appropriate that men of '48 Know the following about one of our classmates. In early April each Dartmouth alumnus/na will receive a ballot for an election to Dartmouth's Board of Trustees. One of the candidates is 1948's own Wilcomb Washburn. Wid and your writer grew up together in Hanover, which allows me to know he holds a deep, lifelong love for our College on the Hill and an equally deep desire to serve it. As a member of its governing body his knowledge of Dartmouth's past and present, his awareness of current issues at the College and elsewhere in education, coupled with his desire to maintain most Dartmouth tradition and Dartmouth's importance to its alumni, would give him the opportunity constructively to contribute to Dartmouth's future.
Wid, along with apparently a growing number of alumni as shown by movement within the Alumni Council, believes that Dartmouth should have more than a single name on its ballots for Trustee, this better to ensure fuller balance on the Board and less a self-perpetuating membership. Wid also believes that election of alumni-nominated Board members can usefully strengthen the administration of the College in that it will be known to represent vital decision-making by a. more cross-sectional Board rather than by a Board of which the administration itself very largely determines membership. Wid's candidacy deserves the serious attention of members of the alumni body concerned about Dartmouth's future.
Wid's classmates should note that his independent candidacy is based on the support of individual alumni. He is not tied to any organization which pre-existed that candidacy. His outlook can generally be characterized as moderate to conservative.
Recognition and congratulations for service should also go to Dick Leggat, former president of the Association of Alumni, the Dartmouth alumni group charged among other duties with ballot procedures in the election of Trustees, and to Dave Karukin, president of the Dartmouth Club of Thailand in Bangkok. Both are busy on matters of concern to the Dartmouth fellowship.
Recognition also to Jim McLaughlin, who keeps busy as an entrepreneur, in addition to his Wall Street activities, Jim just became chairman of McLaughlin Bank N.V., a new enterprise in Willemstad, Curacao, in the Dutch Antilles, which took over a local Bank of Boston branch. A bold but risky step, Jim?
Great Expectations Bookstore proprietor T.T. Metzel in Evanston tells that his parents met each other for the first time at the wedding of fellow Chicagoan Sumner Sollitt's parents in a small Mississippi town well over 60 years ago. Small world?
It is with profound regret that we advise his fellow '48s that on January 22 DaveMeeker died at a hospital near his Troy, Ohio, home. Condolences to his family and friends which include so many men of Dartmouth.
