Alumni Fund Chairman Ralph Lazarus '35 (left) is shown presenting the Fred A. Howland Trophy Award to Eugene D. Towler, Head Agent for the Class of 1917, at the April 3 dinner meeting of class agents and class officers held at the Hotel Commodore in New York. Mr. Towler accepted the posthumous award in behalf of his predecessor, John W. Saladine '17, whom the award honored. The citation read as follows:

"Jack Saladine became Head Agent for his Class in 1962 and in that first year of his leadership 1917 increased its giving to the Fund from $10,000 to over $18,000. In the five campaigns that followed, he led 1917 to new dollar records, culminating with last year's high of over $29,000. Although beset by increasing arthritic pain, Jack never lost his dedication or his warm, human relationship with his agents and his classmates. Jack would have been the first to say that the records achieved by 1917 were due to the efforts of his agent team and to the understanding and support of the entire 1917 family. His death on January first of this year brought to an end a bright chapter in the history of a great class. The Alumni Fund Committee is highly privileged to honor 1917 and this loyal Dartmouth man by presenting, posthumously, the Fred A. Howland Award to John W. Saladine as the outstanding Head Agent of a class more than forty years out of College."
